The 12th edition of Bif&st-Bari International Film Festival – under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic, supported by the Cinema Directorate of the Ministry of Culture – will take place from Saturday September 25 to Saturday October 2, 2021, in Theatres Petruzzelli, Piccinni, Kursaal and Margherita. The event will therefore be pitched as “the Film Festival on stage”.

Bif&st, created and directed by Felice Laudadio, is chaired by film director Margarethe von Trotta. Film director Ettore Scola is honorary president. Enrico Magrelli, film critic, is the consultant to the artistic direction, Giuliana La Volpe is the programmer. Angelo Ceglie is the executive director.

The outline of 2021 program was announced during the closing press conference of 11th Bif&st, on August 30, 2020.

International Premieres

Eight films, selected among the most recent world productions, and absolute Italian premieres, will be presented in the non-competitive section International Premieres in Teatro Petruzzelli.

Before the screenings, scheduled at 9 p.m., the “Federico Fellini Platinum Awards for Cinematic Excellence” will be conferred to great cinema and culture personalities, from Italy and from abroad.

International Panorama

Teatro Petruzzelli – with afternoon screenings – will host the International Panorama competition with 12 films from all over the world, Italian or international premieres. The jury – headed by an Italian or foreign film professional, together with other filmmakers – will confer the three following awards: Bif&st International Award for best film director – Bif&st International Award for best leading actress – Bif&st International Award for best leading actor.

ItaliaFilmFest/Feature Films

This section will present –in Teatro Piccinni – Italian feature films awarded by film critics together with the artistic direction. Nine awards will be conferred: Premio Mario Monicelli for best film director; Premio Franco Cristaldi for the producer of the best film; Premio Luciano Vincenzoni for best script; Premio Vittorio Gassman for best leading actor; Premio Anna Magnani for best leading actress; Premio Alberto  Sordi for best non-leading actor; Premio Alida Valli for best non-leading actress; Premio Ennio Morricone for best composer; Premio Peppino Rotunno for best director of photography.

ItaliaFilmFest 2021/New Italian cinema – Competition

A jury of 24 selected audience members, headed by a cinema and/or cultural personality, will confer the following awards reserved to Italian feature films selected in competition by the artistic direction and world-premiering at Bif&st: Premio Ettore Scola for best film director; Premio Mariangela Melato per il cinema for best emerging actress; Premio Gabriele Ferzetti for best emerging actor.

History, memory – Tribute to 01 Distribution

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of 01 Distribution, the most prominent Italian distribution company, founded thanks to RAI Cinema, a Tribute will be presented in Teatro Kursaal and Teatro Piccinni. The event will include 40 films (a selection of the most important titles among the 526 films distributed over two decades), to be introduced by some of the related talents – film directors, actresses, actors. An historical book will also be published – by RAI Cinema – outlining the long and prestigious activities of 01 Distribution.

Film workshops

This year again some professional workshops will be held by cinema personalities for 25 participants (max. 29 years old) selected through an open call. Bif&st 2021 is organizing the following workshops: 1. Film direction; 2. Screenwriting; 3. Film editing; 4. Film criticism; 5. Acting.

Cinema and industry

Bif&st is preparing an important event with screenings and meetings dedicated to the aerospace industry in Apulia region and throughout Italy.
